By Jacob Page The much loved RNZAF Iroquois have made its final appearance over the skies of Blenheim. The aircraft has been an integral part of the New Zealand Air Force for 49 years and they were given a send-off by veterans and by Safe Air staff at Woodbourne who have helped service
them for 20 years. More than 50 veterans were given one final flight over Marlborough, yesterday before the aircraft is retired from active duty on July 1.

Continued from page 1 Former crewman Ed Bamber clocked up more than 4000 flying hours in the Iroquois but still had a few more minutes left for a final flight. He started in 1975 and had nine years serving on them including tours to the Middle-East, Pacific Islands, Malaysia and Antarctica. “They’re very practical and can do anything. “They have a great sound, it’s so distinctive. Ed says while he has plenty of positive memories from his time on the aircraft but also remembers some incidents including a mid air collision. “I’ve seen a few of these
pranged up but most managed to walk away from them. “They were good in the jungle because you could never tell where they are coming from. “When you pulled the doors back you used to have 60 machine guns and you used to be able to fly over and spray (the enemy) and then be gone again without those on the grounding knowing where you were. “It is a pity to see them go… They’re bloody tough old things.” Ernie Thompson was an engineer with them sporadically at Wigram in Christchurch and he could remember them being involved in not only combat but a royal tour with Prince Charles
prior to his marriage to Princess Diana. RNZAF Base Woodbourne, wing commander Mike Salvador described the Iroquois as “like a Massey Ferguson tractor”. “It’s just kept going and going for many years.” Two of the aircraft have been donated to the air force Museum in Wigram, while an airframe will be donated to the Waiouru Army Museum for public display. Another airframe will be loaned to the Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology. The aircraft will be replaced with eight NH90 and five A109LUH utility helicopters.

Art-tastic awards ceremony Story and photo by Celeste Lodewyk A large crowd gathered on Saturday night for the Opening night and presentation of the Peters Doig Marlborough Art Awards at the Yealands Estate Marlborough Gallery. A total of 63 entries were chosen for the final stage of judging, and surprisingly this year all of the major prize recipients were women. Taking out the Supreme Award, a $3000 cash prize sponsored by the Peters Doig Chartered Accountants was Dunedin art student Gemma Baldick. Her entry titled ‘First Date’ was a comical scene of a hunter out with his dogs and his lady friend dressed in a black cocktail dress. This was Gemma’s first time entering the awards, and says her entry was based on “piecing together fragments of life”. Gemma was one of two sisters that had entered this year, and says her prize money would go towards her final year of study.
Winning the Mark Stevenson Patron’s Choice Award was Susie Baker of Kaikoura and the Highly Commended Marlborough Artist was Caroline della Porta. The Seymour Picture Framing Award for fourth place went to Karen Pringle of Invercargill, The Nola Hurford Memorial Award for third prize went to Susie Baker of Kaikoura, and the Marlborough Art Society Award second place award went to Kathryn Carter of Auckland. In presenting the Nola Hurford Memorial Award there was a moving speech made by MAS president Peter Davidson in memory of Nola’s husband Tom who passed away recently. He paid tribute to the long serving patron and supporter of the Society and introduced Tom’s son John who presented the award. Star chef toys with seasonal restaurant
By Jacob Page Michelin star Kiwi chef Matt Lambert is keen to open up a seasonal restaurant in Marlborough at some point in the future. The 34-year-old owner of New York’s The Musket Room was in Blenheim for a charity lunch at Gibbs on Godfrey on Sunday to support the Kaipupu Point Sounds Wildlife Sanctuary and said he was a big supporter of the area. “My ideal situation would be to have a seasonal restaurant that was here just over summer – two or three months of the year. “I’ve been thinking about it for a year but I’ve done nothing about it… I’d have to partner up with someone but I think you could go really high-end for three months of the year.” Matt supports sustainable fishing and has regularly seen how Marlborough fish is sustainably farmed. “At some point in the not too distant future people are going to be scrambling to try to buy fish because it’s not going to last forever.” Matt opened The Musket Room with the intention of earning Michelin star food restaurant excellence within three years – he achieved it in four months.
“I was initially very pleased because it was a life goal but then I thought more long term. “The speed of how quickly it happened actually scared me because I didn’t want to lose it.” Matt says he always looks to improve the menu and is not afraid to change things up. “One night my wife said the menu hadn’t changed for a wee while so I changed the whole menu on a Monday. “You have to trust that what you are doing is really good.” Matt says he’d like to be a millionaire by 40, but admits he has plenty of work to do. He says an aspiring cook would be best served to slow down in the kitchen for better results. “Slow down and pay attention, you don’t have to bang everything out, just take your time and enjoy what you do in the kitchen and the results will take care of themselves.” The event raised $25,000 for the Kaipupu Point Sounds Wildlife Sanctuary which would be spent on improving the overall experience for children as well as the Picton site of the organisation.

Elderly woman lucky to be alive Marlborough Police say an 87-year-old Blenheim woman is lucky to be alive after straying from a rest home last Thursday afternoon and falling into a creek. The woman, who has suffered a stroke and also has dementia was last seen by staff at the rest home about 3.45pm. Shortly after 6pm staff realised she had gone missing and began
hypothermia and in a serious condition. Marlborough Area Commander Inspector Simon Feltham says it was not known how long the woman had been in the water, but given her situation she would have been unlikely to have survived if officers hadn’t responded and found her so quickly. “This was a difficult situation
with a large area needing to be covered in a short period of time. “I’m very proud of the response from police staff who came from across Marlborough to this search and am rapt that they were able to successfully locate the elderly woman in such a short period of time.” On Friday the woman was reportedly in a satisfactory condition.
A group of five people in an inflatable boat had to be rescued on Saturday afternoon after becoming stranded. The Nelson Marlborough Rescue Helicopter was dispatched to Robin Hood Bay in Marlborough by police. The group had become stranded on an isolated beach surrounded by rocky cliffs. They were unable to launch their craft back into the water due to a large breaking swell, one of the group members climbed the steep cliff to call for help. The helicopter was able to locate and uplift the group, who were uninjured; they were flown to a waiting ambulance at Robin Hood Bay for a medical check up.

Better broadband Marlborough’s quest for better internet needs your help. Marlborough residents, especially those in rural areas and the Marlborough Sounds, are urged to help identify existing gaps in broadband and mobile coverage as this region prepares to bid for a share of the government funding for improvements to national connectivity. The Marlborough District Council, supported by rural, business and community leaders, is bringing together Marlborough’s case for a slice of the funds that government has allocated to areas where there are technical or financial obstacles to delivering better connectivity. Government has allocated
about $350 million through the Rural Broadband Initiative, Ultrafast Broadband and Mobile Black Spot Fund and local government has been asked to help identify where this would be best spent. M a r l b o r o u g h M ayo r Alistair Sowman says access to improved broadband and mobile infrastructure in this region would encourage business productivity, help improve health and education outcomes, enhance service delivery, and increase social connectivity. “Improved connectivity is in line with Council’s vision of the future for a ‘Smart & Connected’ Marlborough. We’ve got to have the infrastructure to allow this to happen and
there’s a real opportunity here to get Government assistance if we all get in behind this application.” Mr Sowman says people can help build up Marlborough’s case by completing a survey to assess current internet connectivity and cell phone coverage at: https:// www.surveymonkey.com/s/ InternetConnectivity Anyone unable to fill out the survey on-line can post it to the Marlborough District Council or phone Katie Covell at Council, (03) 520 7400. A series of forums around the region are planned to begin next month to help build Marlborough’s case to Government for funding to achieve better connectivity.
More moisture needed By Jacob Page Just because water restrictions became a thing of the past in April does not mean Marlborough is out of danger of the effects of drought. Statistics released by Liaison Scientist Rob Agnew show Marlborough’s rainfall for April of 52mm was just below the historical average of 53.2mm. It was a far cry from the same period last year which had three times that amount of rain. April also saw less sunshine hours than average with the region basking in 162.5 hours of sunshine in the second month of autumn. That number was considerably up on last year’s figure of 123.7 but still below the

historical average. Agnew says a lot more is needed in the four months May to August 2015, to recharge the soil moisture before spring growth gets underway. The 10 month rainfall total for July 2014 to April 2015 is the lowest on record for these 10 months. However, this is because July and August 2014 both recorded low totals. The water deficit for the 2014-2015 season of -642.3 mm was 173.3 mm greater than the long-term average. This indicates that there would have been a much greater need for irrigation this season than in an average year. The average temperature for the month was 14.2 degrees Celsius, which is slightly down on the preview two years.

Demand for Life Drawing workshops Story and photo by Celeste Lodewyk Craig Bluett’s life drawing workshops held last year were so successful that he introduced a second to keep up with demand. Titled ‘Life Drawing Classes’, these workshops will begin in May and run through until June, and are held in conjunction with the Marlborough Art Society at the Yealands Estate Marlborough Gallery. He will also be holding a ‘Naked Clay’ workshop in July for those wanting to take more of a three-dimensional approach to their art. What is exciting about this year’s workshops is that Craig has secured funding from Creative New Zealand, which has subsided the workshop fees and funded some new easels. The workshops now cost $90 per student, run for six weeks and are open to all abilities. “I welcome all skill levels to take part whether you are a beginner or enjoy other forms of art, you will all be making marks on the page and drawing from live models. “What I find interesting is seeing people’s personal approach to life drawing and I encourage them to use their own unique styles,” he says. Running these workshops is only a small part of Craig’s artistic career. For most of his life he has been creating art as well as teaching in schools and private art classes. Dear Ed Re your article from last week, do these current Councillors like having their heads patted and being tickled under the chin so much that they do not evaluate the work of Kobus Mentz before using him again. An analysis of the Grow Marlborough document would see that large portions had to be discarded or have not been implemented (remember liquefaction has been around for millions of years). The people of Seddon are being asked to bare the lion’s share for the water upgrade; surely those who benefit most from Kobus’s latest plan should pay the lion’s share for similar benefits. The council must distinguish between must haves and would like to haves. It is more important to have safe drinking water in Seddon than it is to have a second (third) theatre, a second library and a third art gallery. What would councils level of culpability(if something bad happened) be for knowing supplying dangerous water to its residents while undertaking grandiose plans and edifices that benefit only a few selected privileged groups and individuals. one on one with the Sun
One man brand In 23 years as a solo graphic designer, Blenheim’s Alex Lloyd of Lloyds Graphic Design and Communication, has turned a hobby into a career. He talks to Sun reporter Jacob Page about inspiration, his love/hate relationship with technology and why he loves his granny flat. Alex Lloyd is essentially a one-man band and loves it. He’s come a long way from calling up Victoria University as an 11-year-old to enquire about a law degree. “I loved the idea of wanting to be a lawyer just because of what I saw on TV rather than the reality of it. “It was the third form at Marlborough Boys’ College that changed things,” he says. “I’d always enjoyed drawing and art but never saw it as a career until one day with my third form art teacher Keith Reid – one of his ex pupils came through and he was a graphic designer and he was showing what he did. “I thought to myself ‘that’s it’ and I changed all my subjects from ones that were going to help me get into law to ones that had a design focus.” After working for a type setting firm in Wellington straight out of secondary school, he wanted to return to Blenheim and worked at the Marlborough District Council and then in the art department at the Marlborough Express before an ironic moment saw him branch out on his own. “I couldn’t get my head around doing art work on the computer and that was part of the reason I left, I couldn’t get my head around it.” “My wife had already planned to leave her job because my one was the secure one. “So we had lunch that day and I said ‘hey, guess what I’ve handed in my notice’ and she thought I was joking.” Alex has a strong Christian faith and believes it was God who gave him the strength to make the move and it’s been God’s will that has kept him doing the role since 1992. “We both left our jobs in same week…But she knew it was the right thing to do. “From day one, I’ve been flat out and I’ve looked back and I know it doesn’t make sense because I had no public profile. “There was no business plan or five year plan… I’m sure people just looked at me and wondered what I was doing.” Alex works from his granny flat which is his office in front of his house and is happy not to seek a public profile. He has 15 to 30 jobs on the go at any one time and is thankful to be busy. “Without the clients I can’t provide for my family and this would be just a hobby. “I know some people who try to work from home struggle to stay focused but trust me the bills keep
you focused. ‘You haven’t got one boss, you’ve got 50 bosses and each client doesn’t care that you have 49 others on the book so I owe it to them to keep the commitment there.” Alex says he still loves designing using a pencil and paper and getting to know his clients. “It’s always important to get an idea of what the client wants in their brand but it’s always good to chuck a left-field option in there because that’s why they are coming to you otherwise they might as well just use a computer program. “A brand is crucial because it’s the first port of call that the public has with your
business.” He is a big fan of fonts and even has a documentary on Helvetica which he threatens to force his kids to watch if they misbehave. “So far no one has watched it right through with me.” Alex says he’s never seen that as pressure but believes what he does can be an investment in the long-term future of the business. “For me creating a logo is distilling all the information a client wants to convey in its simplest form.” Alex says he works all sorts of hours and moments of inspiration can strike at

any time. “It’s great that I can work anywhere... I can watch one of my children’s swimming lessons while working away. “It is ironic that I was initially wanting to avoid working on a computer and now I have so many old computers and new computers lying around here.” He says he owes his longevity to his family support. “You can’t stop a creative person and I have a family who allows me to be creative. My wife Linda looks after the bookkeeping and that allows me to focus on the talents that I have been given.”

How to make a will If you don’t have a Will yet, or need to update a previous Will, you should get one drafted by someone with experience, such as a lawyer or trustee company. Your Will must also be signed and witnessed. If the proper procedures are not followed, your Will may not be valid. Instructions in your Will can include: • Your partner, children, grandchildren, other family members or friends you want to provide for • Any family trust that you wish to leave property, money, or other assets to • Specific bequests such as cash payments, jewellery, artwork or furniture you want to leave to particular family members or friends • Any charities or organisations you may want to leave money to • Details of how you would like your funeral to be carried out
It’s a good idea to to set up enduring powers of attorney at the same time as you make your will. Keeping a Will Review your will whenever you have a big life change like the birth of a child or separation. For example, if you get married or enter a civil union your Will is automatically revoked unless it states otherwise or specifically says that it was made with regard to the coming union. Other life events like birth of children or grandchildren, or the purchase of a property, are all good reasons to check your Will. Make sure you keep a copy of your Will in a safe and accessible place - and let your executor and loved ones know where it is. If your Will can’t be found, your last wishes can’t be followed!
Special gift A bequest is a method of making a lasting gift to a cause or issue that you feel strongly about, whether it be the Cancer Society, ambulance service or animal shelter. It can make your caring last for future generations. In order to ensure that your gift has lasting value it is important to structure the gift well. The following are points to think about when making a bequest. • Immediate or long term benefit? • Naming a cause or an organisation
If there is a charity or organisation you wish to make a bequest to, include it in your Will.
• What will the cause or organisation really need? • Consider writing a profile of your values and wishes • Think about your dependents • Take advice

MARSHALL JOINS MAKOS Tasman Makos and Chiefs fullback Tom Marshall will play ITM Cup rugby for the Makos this season, after delaying his departure to English club Gloucester. Marshall, 24, was due to join Gloucester after the current Super 15 season with the stipulation he was not in All Blacks contention, but after All Black selectors told him he was on their radar, his departure was delayed until November.

Marathon fast approaching By Adam Poulopoulos The Saint Clair Vineyard Half Marathon has been sold out for close to four months, and this weekend 3000 runners will take to the course. The event, which comprises running, hybrid and walking categories, begins at 9am at the Saint Clair cellar door. Race organiser Anna Polson says tickets for the event sold out in mid-January, about a
month earlier than for last year’s event. “Every year it seems to sell out a month earlier. We have been really happy with the response. “The plans are going well and now we’re hoping for a fine day. That’s our biggest worry at this stage.” She says the event attracts a lot of interest from out-of-towners who stay for the weekend.
“They go on wine tours, Sounds tours and go on trips. “For some reason, it just appears to be an excuse for people to get away.” The event will be followed by a party, named ‘Revelry,’ to be held at Marlborough Lines Stadium 2000. About 950 people will be attending the party, and covers band Uncle Monkey will play at the event.

The 11-year-old Tua Marina School pupil has just returned from the Otago Open karting meet in Dunedin, where he finished top in the JR Vortex Mini Rok standings, won every one of his races and broke the lap
record three times. His upcoming schedule includes the twoday Sunbelts meet, where he won the cadet class and a trophy as the best Marlborough rider last year. The two days of racing will be held in Blenheim on May 30, then Nelson on May 31. William says the need for speed keeps him
Fitness challenge By Adam Poulopoulos A versatile fitness challenge aimed at improving specific areas of your overall wellbeing has started again in Marlborough. The 20 Week Challenge, run in Blenheim by Ignite Health and Fitness personal trainer Wendy Hughes, kicked off this week. Participants choose from a variety of categories, which are varied to include fitness goals like flexibility and cardiovascular endurance, or other facets like adventurers, which encourages participants to try new activities, and Fit4Business, where participants can set business goals. Something with bigger cars.” William’s skill behind the wheel has kept him busy in recent times. His father Gareth says William and his team spend the majority of weekends at kart tracks around the country. “There aren’t many weekends spare when you take Christmas and New Year out of it.” He says the skills William is learning, both on and off the track, will hold him in good stead. “It’s about having fun. That’s the biggest thing. “It teaches him good morals and ethics. Every time he wins he has to make a speech thanking his team and the sponsors.”
Stella Blake was the star as the Marlborough Girls’ College CrossCountry was held on Friday afternoon. Stella, running in the under-16 category, finished the three-kilometre course in 12 minutes and 30 seconds, more than a minute faster than anyone else across all divisions. Emily Dalton won the under-14 race, while Libby Grigg won in the under-15 category, finishing only two seconds in front of her nearest challenger, Yazmin Shipley. Kelsie Fitzpatrick won the under-19 race, four seconds ahead of Michaela Rowe, while Jess Deaker was third.
FOOTBALL The Marlborough Development team were held to a 3-3 draw by the Richmond First XI at A&P Park on Saturday. They head to Nelson to play Suburbs Seals at 3pm on Saturday.
LEAGUE After an encouraging first half the Wairau Taniwha were beaten 64-16 by Wanderers Wolves in their match on Saturday. The Taniwha led for some of the first half, but two late tries saw Wanderers lead 18-10 at the break. The Taniwha play Victory Phoenix at Oliver Park on Saturday.
